Caplansky's Delicatessen
Caplansky’s Delicatessen

I’ve been to Schwartz’s in Montreal and tried their fatty smoked meat sandwich. It was amazing! Juicy, tender and full of flavour; probably the best smoked meat I’ve ever tasted. I was on a search for something similar in Toronto, and Caplansky’s was a place that many recommended.

We had split peas with smoked meat soup and smoked meat poutine to start. The soup’s flavour was decent but didn’t pack a lot of flavour. On the other hand, the poutine was great; fries were crispy, smoked meat gravy was good and the cheese curds were the type that I like (slightly melted). Each table had a small sign promoting freshly squeezed lemonade; so we naturally ordered one to try and it was nothing spectacular (but it was definitely not from concentrate).

The Caplansky Burger (made up of 70% ground beef and 30% smoked meat) was cooked to perfection. It didn’t have an overwhelming taste of the smoked meat, but enough to differentiate itself from regular beef patties. The smoked meat sandwich was amazing. I can’t say it matches up to Schwartz, but it’s definitely close. It almost melts in your mouth and packed a lot of flavour. The only difference between Schwartz and Caplansky’s was the amount of fat (and flavour from the fat) the meat had. If I requested a fatter cut of meat at Caplansky’s, it should be up there with Schwartz’s.
